A little while ago, I found myself in a familiar yet frustrating situation: my car kept breaking down. I knew deep down it was time to let it go, but instead, I clung to it. I kept spending on repairs, telling myself I was saving money by not replacing it with a new one. But was I really saving? Of course not. It was some BS I kept telling myself. In fact, I ended up spending way more—money, time, energy and plenty of mental stress.
And guess what? It finally gave up on me. Not just in a driveway or some quiet street, but in the middle of nowhere, on the motorway, 15 miles away from home. That was the moment where reality hit me hard.
The Real Problem Wasn’t the Car—It Was My Mindset
What I learned from this experience was that the problem wasn’t really my car—it was my relationship with money. You see, one of my highest values has always been learning and personal development. For as long as I can remember, my mind has been wired to sacrifice anything to fuel my growth. To me, NOTHING, but NOTHING is more important than investing in my own personal and professional development.
When I really dug into it, I realised that the reason I want more money isn’t because I’m chasing material wealth or financial security for its own sake. No! It’s because I want access to the opportunities that allow me to keep learning—whether that’s through buying courses, attending seminars, connecting with mentors or traveling to meet people who inspire me. Every one of those opportunities requires money.
And that’s where my focus has always been: on growth. But I wasn’t focusing on money itself. I didn’t see it as important, as long as I could keep learning.
How Money and Values Connect
But here’s the thing: when something isn’t IMPORTANT to you, it slips away. If we don’t truly value money and see its purpose in our lives, it becomes harder to manage and, eventually, harder to keep. I had to go through some serious mindset work to start valuing money—not for what it is, but for how it can support my bigger goals.
I’ve spent time linking money to my top VALUES. I realised that in order to keep learning and growing, I need to manage money well. Otherwise, those opportunities to invest in my development just won’t be there. It’s about aligning your values and beliefs around money with what you want most in life.
The Masks We Wear Around Money
To really understand my own relationship with MONEY, I started paying attention to how I behaved when those unexpected expenses popped up. You know the ones—when the car breaks down, the washing machine gives up or some other surprise hits you in the face and suddenly you have to spend. Those moments of resistance reveal a lot.
I realised I had been wearing a mask, holding onto fears and beliefs about money that no longer served me. I had been telling myself I was saving or protecting my money when in reality, I was afraid of spending and letting go. And that FEAR ended up costing me even more in the long run.
Transforming My Money Mindset
So, even now, after many years, I’m still working on transforming my relationship with money. Not because I want more money for the sake of it, but because I’ve learned that managing it well is how I’m going to continue investing in the things I truly care about.
This story isn’t about chasing WEALTH. It’s about using money as a tool to fuel your highest values—whether that’s learning, connecting with others, or something else entirely. If we don’t value money and appreciate its role in our lives, it’s going to slip away, just like anything else we don’t nurture.
