How to Shift Your Mindset and Find Abundance in the Here and Now
Living Your Best Life: Discovering Everyday Luxuries
I want to share something personal that hit me recently while I was lying on a beach in Ibiza.
You know that moment when you finally check off a bucket list item? You expect to feel on top of the world, right? Well, let me tell you about the time I was lying on a beach in Ibiza, a place I'd dreamed of visiting for so long. I thought, "This is it, I’ve made it!" But the strangest thing happened—the excitement faded almost immediately. The sense of accomplishment I’d been anticipating was nowhere to be found. It made me realise something important about how we define luxury and happiness.
The Illusion of Future Luxury
Our minds are funny things. They have this habit of making us believe that luxury is something we’ll find in the future. "I’ll be happy when I get that promotion, buy that house, or go on that dream holiday," we think. But here’s the kicker—once we actually reach those milestones, they stop feeling special. What was once a luxury becomes just another part of our everyday lives. Psychologists say it takes only a few months to adjust to new circumstances, making them feel normal. And before we know it, we’re chasing after the next big thing.
Aspiring for More: A Double-Edged Sword
Don’t get me wrong, having goals and dreams is fantastic. But too often, we chase them from a place of feeling like what we have isn’t enough. We look around at the things we’ve achieved, the people in our lives, the comforts we enjoy and we take them for granted. As Lisa Nichols reminds us, “The daily practice of gratitude is one of the conduits by which your wealth will come to you.” We stop feeling grateful and when that gratitude fades, so does our sense of satisfaction. We end up stuck in a cycle of "I need more to be happy," which never truly ends.
Redefining Luxury: A Mindset Shift
So, what if we flipped the script? What if we stopped viewing luxury as something to be chased and started seeing it as a state of mind? Think about it: being alive, having your health, living in peace—these are all forms of luxury. Having a family that cares, friends who show up for you, and talents or skills that you can share—these are the real luxuries of life. Even the small things like a quiet moment to yourself, a good book, or a delicious meal—these are all luxuries, if only we choose to see them that way.
The Real Question: Are You Enjoying Your Present Luxuries?
So, here’s the challenge: instead of always reaching for the next big thing, let’s take a moment to appreciate the luxuries we already have. It’s okay to want more, but how often do we stop and really enjoy what’s already here? As John Assaraf said, “What you think about, you bring about.” Let’s focus on the everyday moments that make life rich and fulfilling. By shifting our mindset to recognise the luxury in the present, we can find a deeper, more lasting sense of happiness.
Embrace Abundance Now
Ibiza taught me that luxury isn’t about checking off bucket list items or achieving some distant dream. It’s about recognising and appreciating what we have right now. When we stop chasing the future and start living in the present, we open ourselves up to a life filled with true abundance.
“You are the master of your life, and the Universe is answering your every command.”
So, take a deep breath, look around, and find the luxury in your life today.
Trust me, it’s there, and it’s waiting for you to notice it.
