"My Job Sucks, But That’s Life!"... Or Is It?
How a Hidden Fear Is Keeping You Stuck and What You Can Do to Finally Break Free
“I’m definitely going to quit my job,” you tell yourself, over and over again.
Weeks go by, then months, and yet you’re still there.
You’ve made this promise to yourself, but when push comes to shove, you just can’t seem to take the leap.
Sound familiar?
You’re not alone. One of my clients came to me with this exact issue. She kept saying she wanted to quit, but somehow never did. Every time she got close, something stopped her. And the frustrating part? She knew she wanted more, deserved more, but couldn’t figure out why she was so stuck. She was stuck for 10 years in the same rut.
Here’s the thing—this isn’t just about jobs.
This pattern can show up in so many parts of your life. Whether it’s starting a business, asking for a raise, investing in something new, spending on a treat or taking on a project that could push you out of your comfort zone. Every time you think about taking action, fear steps in, and suddenly you’ve got a hundred reasons to stay right where you are.
But that’s the real issue, isn’t it?
You’re stuck—and the reason why might surprise you.
So, what’s actually going on?
Why do you keep putting off the thing you know will move you forward?
We all have a bunch of convenient excuses lined up:
“I’m not ready yet”.
“The timing’s off”.
“I need to wait for something better”.
“It’s just not that urgent right now.”
Sound familiar?
The truth is, none of these are the real reason you’re holding back.
Let’s be real—it’s FEAR.
But not just any kind of fear. It’s not fear of the unknown or fear of failure. This fear goes much deeper. It’s tied to something from your past and it’s been hanging around for years, maybe even decades. You’ve probably gotten so used to it that you don’t even realise it’s there anymore. But it’s been running the show all along.
In my client’s case, she was terrified of ending up in a job where someone would control her, dictate her every move and stop her from doing what she loved. At first glance, it looked like a typical fear of losing freedom, right? But when we started digging deeper, we discovered it wasn’t about the job at all.
Her fear had nothing to do with the future—it was all about the past.
Turns out, this feeling of being controlled went back to her childhood. Her dad was always telling her “no.” “No, you can’t have a bike.” “No, you can’t go on that school trip.” “No, you can’t date that guy.” “No, you can’t have friends over.” Every decision, big or small, was met with resistance. She grew up feeling like she had no control over her own life. And here’s the thing—she didn’t even realise that this fear had followed her into adulthood.
Fast forward to today, and every time she thought about changing jobs, she was subconsciously reliving that same scenario. She wasn’t just afraid of a new job—she was terrified of repeating her past. Of ending up in another situation where someone else had power over her.
And maybe this sounds a bit too familiar. Maybe your fear doesn’t look exactly like hers, but think about it: how often do you find yourself hesitating, avoiding, or talking yourself out of taking action? How many times have you stayed in a job you hate or avoided asking for that raise, not because you didn’t want it, but because something was stopping you? That something might be fear—fear that’s deeply rooted in your past.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Most of us think fear is just about the future. We worry about what might happen if we make a wrong move or fail. But in reality, fear is a response to something we’ve already experienced.
Your brain, specifically the amygdala (your emotional centre), stores these memories of past pain and every time a similar situation comes up, it triggers the same fear response. So, even though you’re in a completely different situation now, your brain reacts as if you’re back in that old, painful memory.
In my client’s case, her brain was replaying the feeling of being controlled by her dad. Every new job or decision felt like another opportunity for someone to take over her life again. And so, she froze.
But here’s the good news: You can actually neutralise this fear. You can stop it from running your life.
What we did with my client was go back to each of those moments where he felt powerless. We looked at the specific memories of her dad telling her what she couldn’t do and slowly, step by step, we neutralised the emotional charge attached to them. By doing this, we balanced her perception—she no longer felt trapped by those memories, no longer felt like someone else had to be in control.
After a few hours of working through it, something incredible happened. She told me, “I think I’m ready to move on.” For the first time, she actually believed she could take action without fear holding her back.
And then came the best part—she walked into her boss’ office, ready to quit. But instead of just walking away, her boss did something unexpected. He offered her more money and more freedom to make her own decisions, just to keep her around.
She went from quietly quitting to actively owning her space. She allowed herself to earn more, because for the first time, she believed he deserved more.
Now, this wasn’t some miracle coincidence. It wasn’t about luck. It happened because my client had finally broken through the fear that had kept her playing small for so long. She stopped letting her past dictate her future. She stopped telling herself she wasn’t in control. And because of that, she opened the door to more—more money, more freedom and more confidence.
So, what does this have to do with you and your money?
A lot.
Fear isn’t just stopping you from taking action. It’s stopping you from earning more. From stepping into the life and financial freedom you deserve. If you don’t deal with the fear that’s keeping you stuck, you’ll keep playing small. You’ll keep undercharging, avoiding big opportunities and staying in jobs that don’t serve you.
But here’s the thing—you can change this. Just like my client, you can dig into those fears, neutralise them and stop letting them control you.
Once you do that, you open up a whole new world of possibilities. You can walk into your boss’s office, ask for that raise or even start that business you’ve been dreaming about.
And more importantly—you’ll believe you’re worth it.
So, what fear is holding you back?
What’s stopping you from taking that next step?
Because once you face it, like my client did, you’ll realise that the only thing standing between you and earning more, living more, being more, is a fear you’re finally ready to leave behind.
